SAY NO TO PALM OIL AND SAVE THE JUNGLE AND THE ORANGUTANS
If you have time during your stay in Bukit Lawang to take part in our ECO TOURISM PROGRAM, we would like to invite you to visit a local Tree Planting Project.
(You have the option to donate and plant your own tree there with a sign where your name is written on!)
This project was established by only local people in Selang Pangeran,a new eco tourism area, around 5 kilometers away from the tourist village Bukit Lawang. It is located close to the Landak River and directly bordering the Gunung Leuser National Park.
Deforestation is a big problem in Indonesia and especially North Sumatra.,as you allready have noticed in the media.
Large areas of forests and jungle have been cleared by big companies(paper and palm oil industry),forests have been burned by plantation owners and the logging industry is another big source of deforestation.By 2012 Indonesia had surpassed the rate of deforestation in Brazil, and become the fastest forest clearing nation in the world.
The impact is huge and sad...especially for the critically endangered sumatran orangutan as they loose their natural habitats and die!!!
A 2007 assessment by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) predicts that orangutans will be virtually eliminated in the wild within two decades if current deforestation trends continue.
Only 6.600 sumtran orangutans remain in the wild!
The palm oil industry is linked to major issues such as deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty and indigenous rights abuses in the countries where it is produced, as the land and forests must be cleared for the development of the oil palm plantations.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, an area the equivalent size of 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour to make way for palm oil production. This large-scale deforestation is pushing many species to extinction, and findings show that if nothing changes species like the orangutan could become extinct in the wild within the next 5-10 years, and Sumatran tigers less than 3 years.
Find here more informations about CONFLICT PALM OILD and HOW DEFORESTATION AFFECT ORANGUTANS:
With planting your own choosen fruit tree there (durian, mango, rambutan),you can help to protect the rainforest, its unique biodiversity and its wildlife just like the rare and critically endangered sumatran orangutan.
You can choose between several fruit trees which one you want to plant, and there will be also a sign close to your tree with your personal name as the donator written on.
With the money of this project, the community is saving up money to buy new lands bordering the Gunung Leuser National Park to make sure those lands can not be burned and use for palm oil plantations.
Furtherway they building a small jungle school to educate the local kids in that area(they are teached about conservation, thejungle, recycling, animals).EDUCATED KIDS ARE THE KEY TO DO SOME CHANGES!!!
Even the local community close by the area of Selang Pangeran will be empowered to go other ways instead o hunting wildlife animals and work with palm oil.
With the money of this project the founders pay local people sallery to work with them cleaning and protecting the jungle border, building the jungle school and teaching the kids.So the locals get new livelihood opportunities.
The fruits will be later on also food source for both villagers and wildlife such as the sumatran orangutan.
The area of Selang Pangeran is frequently visited of wild animals.
We love the ideas of this project and want therefore support it.
