Bukit Lawang Conservation Festival 2018

From 2nd to 4th november 2018, we joined the 3rd Bukit Lawang Conservation Festival...presented by BUKIT LAWANG TRUST .

Read here about last years Conservation Festival :

https://www.bukitlawang-jungletrekking.com/eco-tourism-program/bukit-lawang-conservation-festival-2017/

The aim of the Bukit Lawang Conservation Festival is to protect the Gunung Leuser Ecosystem, one of the last orangutan habitats in the world. Its a gathering for the indonesian community to find ecological and economical alternatives on a long term and to present NGO´s and local projects / initiatives that work in North Sumatra.

Further purposes are:

  • Support and encourage eco-tourism in Bukit Lawang and build awareness for Bukit Lawang as an eco-tourism destination
  • To educate the local community and visiting tourists about the Leuser Ecosystem and therefore encourage protection and long-term sustainability
  • encourage and educate on safe eco-tourism practices with wildlife and long-term sustainability
  • Invite prominent conservationists to talk and share their specialist knowledge in this area
  • Increase knowledge locally and with visitors about the threats the leuser eco-system faces and how to tackle them together
  • Grow audience / PR learning about the Leuser Ecosystem
  • Grow this annual event and bring more high profile conservationists to visit
  • Encourage the NGOs working in the area to communicate, share and work together to protect the Leuser Ecosystem
  • Encourage the Guides and Rangers to communicate and work together to protect the Leuser Ecosystem
  • Facilitate ‘Round Tables’ with NGOs and stakeholders and continue to support instrumental conversations and implement changes

The firs day was a day for the local kids and students of the Bukit Lawang Trust Education Centre with lot of dancing, singing, performing, playing games ( a lot of them were  recycled games made from the volunteers at the Bukit Lawang Trust school to show the kids what they can make out of plastic trash!), drama and theatre workshops operated by the team of Darwin Animal Doctors who were a main sponsor of this event and came allready for the second time now. It was a great day and the kids had a lot of fun!:)

The second day was created for the local community, NGO,s and local projects to present the work they are doing.

Our guests/ partners were OIC (Orangutan Information Centre ) and YPOI                          ( Yayasan Peduli Orangutan Indonesia), ROAR ( Recycle or actively reduce ), our own CARE NOW project , a stall for the Bukit Lawang Trust Education Centre, the STAY WILD  team from Batu Katak , the team of Bukit Lawang´s Green Class, Ibu Erna with her Ecofarming project and the PPLH group.

They all doing some amazing work in Bukit Lawang and other areas and it was very interesting and inspiring to hear about it.

We also presented our CARE NOW project and showed the visitors things that can be made out of plastic trash....for examle chairs from ecobricks, a carpet weaved from plastic sachets, or purses made out of instand noodles packages. We hope that some people got some ideas and try it at home maybe.

On the third day , the Bukit Lawang Trust Education Centre invited NGO´s and local projects for a roundtable discussion and great workshop about sustainable ecotourism. The teams worked out some important issues and impacts of the tourism in Bukit Lawang and tried to find innovative solutions. A great and very interesting morning !

It has been some fabulous 3 festival days with lots of interesting people and initiatives, amazing kids performances and lots of good vibes, inspirations and motivation and new friendships, partnerships and collaborations.....

THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYBODY WHO HELPED RUNNING THIS FESTIVAL
