On 24th to 26th 2019, the team of Bukit Lawang-Jungle Trekking joined again the 4th Bukit Lawang Conservation Festival 2019....presented by BUKIT LAWANG TRUST .
This year we even decided to became one of the sponsors :) together with Darwin Animal Doctors, Bukit Lawang Trust, Orangutan Alliance and partner for protection.
Read here about last years Conservation Festival :
The aim of the Bukit Lawang Conservation Festival is to protect the Gunung Leuser Ecosystem, one of the last orangutan habitats in the world. Its a gathering for the indonesian community to find ecological and economical alternatives on a long term and to present NGO´s and local projects / initiatives that work in North Sumatra.
Further purposes are:
This year the Festival was lucky to have a very special guest speaker....FAR WIZA...an environmental activist who is fighting to save Sumatra's Leuser Ecosystem and its biodiversity. She even won the 2017 Future For Nature award!
Farwiza won for her ground breaking advocacy work and legal action to protect the Leuser Ecosystem and for fighting against forest destruction and poaching of critically endangered animals. The Future For Nature award is given to talented and ambitious conservationists who are making major contributions to protecting the environment and wildlife.
We felt all very honoured to welcome and meet this special indonesian guest ....she inspires us all <3
Day 1 was created for kids performances & entertainment such as singing, dancing, paper recycling, face painting and some nature bases games.
Further there were many local initiatives and NGO´s invited again to present their environmental efforts.
And of course we listened to the main speach of Far Wiza...such an honour!
Second part of Day 1 was held at Ecolodges to prepare the roundtable discussion and workshop for the next day.
A great and fun daywith a yummy vegan lunch buffet in our familys guesthouse Bukit Lawang Indah:
On Day 2 the roundtable started at Ecolodges .
NGO and project leaders participated and did a workshop about pro's & con's of eco-tourism surrounding the leuser national park; we discussed problems and solutions for a sustainable and responsible eco-tourism in Bukit Lawang. It was such an inspiring time with everyone making pledges to make a positive impact , change and collaboration!
In the morning of the 3rd day, we organised a tree planting activity with some partners of the festival. 44 fruit trees were planted in the bufferzone of the National park.....the aim is to provide enough food for the orangutans so they dont get our of the jungle anymore and destroy local farmers fruit plantations which leads to a conflict between humans and wildlife as some farmers shoot the orangutans.
It has been some great 3 festival days again with lots of interesting people and initiatives, amazing kids performances and lots of good vibes, happy people , inspirations and motivation and new friendships, partnerships and collaborations and new ideas.
THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYBODY WHO HELPED RUNNING THIS FESTIVAL
